Hand Engraving
Why hand engraving on jewelry?
Hand engraving adds beauty and character to the jewelry, it makes the jewelry unique and special and most of all, personal.
So what is hand engraving?
According to Wikipedia “Engraving is the practice of incising a design onto a hard, usually flat surface, by cutting grooves into it”.
I prefer to think about hand engraving as drawing, sculpting and calligraphy writing on metals and specifically on jewelry. Engraving can be something simple as a small letter or a leaf or it can be a whole scene drawn on the metal. One engraver called his gravers “steel brushes” as they literally draw on the metal.
What tools do I use for hand engraving
There are quite a lot of tools that I use for my engraving yet I chose to engrave in the traditional way, using traditional gravers (burins) as opposed to using pneumatic engraving system.
So here are the tools that I use:
- Traditional graver (burin) – this is my “steel brush”. With the graver I draw on the metal. I like to make my own gravers so they exactly fit my needs.
- Engravers vice – used to hold the jewelry for engraving (or for stone setting).
- Microscope – I use a stereo microscope to see every little detail of my engraving.
What can be engraved
While some people want to engrave an inscription on pendants and inside rings, almost anything design can be engraved. Of course there are some things to take into consideration like the design of the engraving should be in harmony with the design of the jewelry, the area to be engraved, the size of the engraving etc.
Custom engraving services
In addition to engraving my own jewelry I offer custom hand engraving services for private customers who want to have an engraving on their own jewelry as well as other jewelers who want to have an added value to their jewelry.
I already had the chance to engrave English and Russian letters in script style, Hebrew letters and ancient Rashi letters but the most interesting engraving so far was Elvish letters from Lord Of The Rings. I also engraved some patterns, logos and decorations on jewelry, according to the customer’s design and desire.
